The Mediterranean diet has proven to be one of the most healthy and balanced lean diets in the world. It is many consisted of vegetables, fish, olive oil and wine in moderation. There are many variations of the Mediterranean diet, as the countries bordering the Mediterranean sea are many. The Mediterranean diet is a very popular diet due to scientific research showing that people who live around the Mediterranean live longer lives and they are also less likely to have heart problems or other chronic diseases.
The key features of such a lean diet are:
- It is rich in fruits and vegetables-particularly those with leaves-especially raw or lightly cooked.
- Contains many cereals and pasta, traditionally made from whole grain wheat.
- There are plenty nuts and seeds.
- Animal products should be consumed in small quantities and mostly red meat and dairy products should be consumed in moderation. It consists of chicken and poultry in general.
- Can be consumed up to four eggs per week.
- The diet is rich in fish and seafood, a great source of omega - 3 fatty acids.
- Although it has high fat content (about 35% of calories), it is low in animal fats (7-8%). That's because olive oil is preferred as main source of fats, which increases the level of good cholesterol - HDL.
- The wine must be consumed in moderation - one to two glasses daily with a meal.
The main advantage of the Mediterranean diet is abundant in antioxidants, fiber and Omega 3 fatty acids. Thus, the Mediterranean diet is basically a healthy diet. Has a strong element of tradition and has proved effective over time.
There is no maintenance plan for the Mediterranean Diet. Essentially consists of the variety of food consumption in small to moderate quantities. Mainly vegetables - fruit, cereals, grains and fish and second place animal products.
The combination of Mediterranean diet with regular exercise seems to be the healthiest lean diet choice and the best solution for weight loss, provided that the products are consumed in reasonable quantities - as long as necessary to satisfy hunger - and cooked naturally and healthy.
